Abstract
This study analyzed the prevalence of gambling addiction, and the reality of gambling addiction among university students. The research was conducted through a nation wide survey of 2,026 samples from four-year coed universities in Korea. This is the first research attempted on such a subject. The research results were as follows: According to the CPGI(Canadian Problem Gambling Index) scale Non-problem gambling has a prevalence 68.7%. Low-risk gambling is 20.3%. Moderate-risk gambling is 9.5%. And, Problem gambling is 1.5%. Among these different types, the total percentage of Moderate-risk gamblers and Problem gamblers among university students reached 11%, which is higher than that of adults(6.1%). The respondents who had experience with Sportstoto (Sportsbook) was 21.4%. Those who had experience with Internet gambling was 19.3%. This result was twice that of the average prevalence rate of gambling addiction of university students. Those university students who had experience with gambling in their primary school days and/or childhood period had a much higher chance of getting a gambling addiction than any other group of people. Gambling addiction among male students was significantly higher than that of female students. Among male students, those who had not finished their military service showed a significantly higher risk of having a gambling addiction than those who had served in the forces. Based on these research results, policies should be implemented to prevent gambling addiction among university students. And, Gambling Prevention Education should be added to the curriculum from elementary school to university.
